Image Resolution for Printing

Image resolution for printing should be judged against the finished product size and viewing distance. Pixel count matters more than the DPI number stored in file metadata.

Use the resolution checker

What to check first

Start with pixel width, pixel height, target print width, and target print height. These four numbers tell you the effective PPI that the printer will actually have to work with.

Common customer file risks

Files from screenshots, social media downloads, AI image tools, and design templates can look large while still being too soft for production.

  • Screenshots often have text and logos that break down quickly.
  • Upscaled images may have enough pixels but weak detail.
  • Template exports can use compressed images inside otherwise clean layouts.

Turn the check into a workflow

Use a repeatable file check before quoting, proofing, or production so staff can give the customer the same answer each time.
